Sepsis is a major healthcare challenge worldwide, contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. The timely and effective management of sepsis is crucial in improving patient survival rates, and nurses play a pivotal role in ensuring adherence to evidence-based sepsis management protocols (Adegbite et al., 2024). Compliance with these protocols, including early recognition, fluid resuscitation, antibiotic administration, and hemodynamic support, has been shown to reduce sepsis-related complications (Okafor & Ibrahim, 2023).
In Nigeria, adherence to sepsis management protocols varies across healthcare institutions, with many facilities facing challenges such as inadequate training, resource limitations, and workload constraints (Nwankwo et al., 2023). Yobe State Specialist Hospital (YSSH) serves as a major referral center, where effective sepsis management is critical to patient outcomes. However, there is limited data on nurses’ compliance with standard sepsis management protocols in the hospital.
This study aims to assess the level of compliance among nurses in YSSH with established sepsis management protocols. The findings will provide insight into the effectiveness of current practices and suggest interventions for improving sepsis care.
Despite the availability of international and national sepsis management guidelines, compliance remains a challenge in many Nigerian healthcare institutions, including YSSH (Muhammad & Yusuf, 2024). Failure to adhere to these protocols can result in delayed interventions, increased mortality rates, and prolonged hospital stays (Olatunji et al., 2023). Factors such as inadequate staffing, lack of continuous education, and resource constraints may hinder compliance.
This study seeks to determine the extent to which nurses at YSSH adhere to sepsis management protocols and identify barriers to compliance. Understanding these factors will help develop targeted strategies to enhance adherence and improve patient outcomes.
This study focuses on nurses working in the critical care and emergency units of YSSH. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and differences in adherence among various departments.
